Alabama Challenged in Court for Denying Accessible Absentee Voting Ballots to the Blind and People with Print Disabilities

MONTGOMERY – TODAY the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), the Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Program (ADAP), and Brown Goldstein & Levy, on behalf of the National Federation of the Blind of Alabama (NFB-AL) and individual Alabamians, filed litigation against the Alabama Secretary of State for denying voters who are blind or have print disabilities access to the state’s absentee ballot program in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Rehabilitation Act (RA). 

Blind Patients Receive Settlement from UNC Health Care System

Raleigh, North Carolina (July 14, 2022): UNC Health Care System (“UNC Health”) will pay $125,000 in damages and admit to violating federal disability rights laws to settle legal claims by blind patients that UNC Health does not provide written materials in Braille, large print, or other accessible formats.

She tirelessly devoted herself to her role as head of the organizational technology group at the National Federation of the Blind, a position from which she leveraged her passion to change the understanding of accessibility everywhere she could by raising the competency of her peers, and challenging companies and organizations to stop making excuses and start building accessible from the beginning.

Blind Americans Encountering Discrimination by Restaurants and Other Services during COVID-19 Crisis

Baltimore, Maryland (April 3, 2020): The National Federation of the Blind, America’s civil rights organization of the blind, today demanded that restaurants, banks, and other businesses, as well as drive-through COVID-19 testing facilities, provide equal service to blind customers as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act, whether the blind customer is on foot or in a vehicle.
